Enhancing Digital Accessibility and Data Integration of the Houston Forensic Science Center Through Strategic Digitization

Amount Requested
$500,000

Project Sponsor
Houston Forensic Science Center

Address
500 Jefferson St, Houston, TX 77002

Project Description and Justification
This project will enhance digital accessibility and data integration at the Houston Forensic Science Center (HFSC) by converting large volumes of paper-based forensic records into searchable digital files. HFSC currently stores millions of documents across multiple systems and formats, including approximately 1,998 banker boxes of paper records in long-term storage. These fragmented systems create barriers to efficient data retrieval and integration with the statewide portal. The proposed project will digitize approximately half of these records, enabling faster access to forensic documentation while improving compliance with state requirements. The initiative will modernize HFSC’s records management system while supporting more efficient case processing and improved justice outcomes in Texas.
