Congressman Menefee Statement on Days-Long Power Outage in Rose Plaza Apartment Complex
HOUSTON, TX — Today, Congressman Christian D. Menefee (TX-18) released the following statement regarding the days-long power outage at the Rose Plaza Apartment Complex in Houston’s Fifth Ward. While power has been restored to some units, approximately half of the complex remains without electricity.
“What’s happening at Rose Plaza is completely unacceptable. In the middle of a Houston summer, families have now gone days without air conditioning and other basic necessities. That is dangerous, especially for our seniors and neighbors with health conditions.
The property owner has a responsibility to keep residents safe and to get this problem fixed as quickly as possible. Families should not be left sitting in the Texas heat for days waiting for their power to come back on.

Based on information available to the Congressman’s office, the outage does not appear to be related to CenterPoint Energy’s equipment. CenterPoint technicians visited the property last week to assess the situation, and the remaining electrical issues appear to be on the property owner’s side.
Crews are currently working to restore power to the remaining buildings. At this time, however, there is no estimated timeline for when power will be fully restored across the complex.
“These are families, seniors, and children who have been without power, and they need help now. In Fifth Ward, we look out for our neighbors. That’s what this community has always done, and that’s what we’re doing now. But Rose Plaza has a responsibility to the people who call this place home. They need to make this right, take care of these families, and do whatever it takes to help residents recover from what they’ve been put through,” said Sandra Edwards, President of the 5th Ward Civic Club.
The American Red Cross and United Way are providing relief to residents impacted by the outage. Bottled water and food are being distributed, and assistance is available to help families replace groceries lost during the prolonged power outage.
