Congressman Menefee Announces $4.2 Million Grant Awarded to Texas Southern University

HOUSTON, TX — Today, Congressman Christian D. Menefee (TX-18) announced that Texas Southern University (TSU) will receive $4.2 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Education’s Supplemental Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Mandatory Grants program.

The federal program provides additional resources to HBCUs to strengthen their institutions and expand educational opportunities for their students.

“TSU is a cornerstone of opportunity in the 18th Congressional District. For generations, it has opened doors for students, strengthened our Houston community, and produced incredible leaders who have made their mark in Texas and across the country,” said Congressman Menefee. “The Tigers are a source of pride for TX-18, and this $4.2 million investment will help build on that legacy. I’m proud to see these federal dollars coming back home to support students and strengthen one of our nation’s great HBCUs.”

Texas Southern University is one of the nation’s largest HBCUs and an important educational and economic institution in Houston’s Third Ward.

Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) will also receive $4.5 million through the program. While Prairie View is located outside the 18th Congressional District, its ties to Houston and TX-18 run deep. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who represented the 18th Congressional District for nearly three decades, was a longtime advocate for Prairie View and its students, recognizing the many PVAMU students, alumni, and families who call Houston home. Rep. Menefee is proud to continue that legacy of supporting HBCUs that educate and create opportunities for Houstonians.
