Congressman Christian D. Menefee Statement on Trump Executive Order Restricting Mail Voting
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Christian D. Menefee (TX-18) released the following statement after President Trump signed an executive order today imposing new federal restrictions on mail-in voting.
“President Trump’s executive order is not about election integrity. It is about making it harder for Americans to vote.
President Trump is directing the United States Postal Service to create a new federal registry for mail-in voters, threatening to withhold federal funds from places that do not comply, and empowering the Attorney General to investigate and prosecute election officials who administer elections under their own state laws. Requiring federal agencies to share sensitive personal information with the Postal Service, which is designed to be accessible to everyone, is not protecting democracy. That is intimidating the people who run our elections."
The hypocrisy is blatant. Just last week, President Trump himself voted by mail. He knows his agenda is deeply unpopular and is hurting hardworking American families, and that is exactly why he is trying to make it harder for others to vote. Limiting access is one of the only ways he and his party can hold onto power.
Mail-in voting is legal. It’s secure. Millions of Americans use it, including members of our military serving overseas, seniors, and working families. There is no evidence of widespread fraud. There never has been. This order piles new bureaucratic barriers onto a voting method that millions of Texans depend on, and it does so with the threat of federal prosecution hanging over any official who gets in the way.
The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy, and Congress cannot stand by while it is dismantled one executive order at a time.”
